Trek to extreme remote Shey Gompa and mysterious monasteries & the Crystal Clear Mountain
Hike to the path with spectacular views of lower and Upper Dolpo
On the Foot of Snow Leopard and Author Peter Mathieson
Trek to Saldang Village, Home to cross border Salt Traderโs Caravan
Trek of Mythical and Mysterious Land, Inner, Upper Dolpo or also called inner Dolpo, situated between Dhaulagiri Range and Tibetan Plateau is one of the least accessible yet most alluring corners of Nepal. Few travelers have penetrated to the heart of Dolpo, a region beautifully portrayed in Eric Valli’s excellent film – ‘Himalaya’.
The trekkers of this regions meets with great wild remoteness, innocent friendly local people living in excessively remote mountain region, ย stunning mountain sceneries, ย people with a mix of ancient Himalayan/Tibetan religions and a hard living with farming and through trade with both Tibet and Nepal.
The major heart pounding, jaw dropping experience of Inner Dolpo trek is the ‘Crystal Clear Mountain’ and the 11th century Shey Gompa and distinct high Himalayan Culture, Mysterious Monasteries, Snow leopards, blue sheepโs. During our trek we pass through the most interesting villages, almost raw trekking routes and meeting of fascinating Locals. The region was visited in 1973 by Peter Mathieson accompanying George Schaller, during his study of the rare Himalayan blue sheep and the even rarer snow leopard. Mathiesonโs subsequent book detailing both his trek and his personal spiritual journey has become a classic of its genre. We crosses high Himalayan passes and get amazed of vast and tranquil beauty of Phoksundo Lake. Trekking to Inner Dolpo or Shey Gompa will lead us to the wild and ancient Trans Himalayan Trade route and return back to Juphal where our trek ends.
The Inner and Upper region was restricted for trekkers until 1989. Even though in 1973, Peter Mathieson accompanying with George Schaller undergone to the deep research of rare Snow leopard and rare Blue ship and published a book detailing along with trek and spiritual journey and became legendary.
The number of people live here are only a few hundred and are among the world’s highest settlements and dwellers with most of the villages are at 4,300meters and above.
This wild and greatly stunning area is also wonderfully portrait in the movie โCaravanโ(Himalaya), and was also clinches huge success and nominated for the Oscar Award for the best foreign language category.
It is only here specifically the people some or entirely still practices the pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion. This early religion was almost entirely replaced by Buddhist doctrine with the beginning of itโs spreading across Tibet and northern Nepal and trans-Himalaya in the 9th century.

I met Dhawa as our guide on Annapurna Base Camp Trek. He talked about Nepal, the local people and areas of Nepal including the Annapurna region and its settlements, and cultural connection with the tradition of going as a Gurkha soldier. This proved to be incredibly important for me, as I don't think I would have been enlightened with such a beautiful historic, cultural, and ethnic richness. I had...
My first contact with Nepal was with our guide called Dhawa. From the first day he was very helpful and very friendly. What impressed us the most was, how well he knows the history of his Country. There was no question he did not know how to answer and the places he had not been. At the same time, he was excellent company and satisfied our every request. Every recommendation for my favorite guide....
